Abstract

Exploring measurements and scientific notation is a POGIL application activity designed to help science students convert between decimal notation, scientific notation, and metric prefixes. Students develop strategies to prevent common mistakes made when converting between negative numbers and negative exponents. After completing this activity, students will be able to identify the correct SI units for base measurements; describe big and small numbers by interconverting between decimals, scientific notation, and metric prefixes; and describe how notation, decimal, and metric prefixes are used to depict magnitude.
